So last night I attended the second ever Beverage Jam. Now, as it turns out, it was entirely different than what I thought it was going to be. I didn't know that there would be people there who were actually good at, y'know, improvising music.
Now, as a classical pianist, I don't have the faintest idea about improvising stuff. You set some sheet music down in front of me, and I'll play it, but you start saying things about chords and inversions and that scary, scary phrase "jam session", and I have a tendency to freeze my face into a slightly panicked smile, while in my brain I'm running around, tripping over the chairs, flailing my arms around, and generally going to bits, because I just don't know how to do that sort of thing.
Or so I thought.
At last night's Beverage Jam (which was, it should be noted, my first ever "jam session"), I discovered that I was actually kinda okay at that sort of thing, which was rather amazing, because I didn't know that I could even begin to do it. Of course, I'm going to have to work on it, learn more about chords and inversions and that whole major/minor seventh thing and figure out what sounds good with what, but it isn't as scary as I thought it was.
So, thanks, T.R., and I hope that fate sets the next Beverage Jam not too far in the future.

I am seriously wanting to attend but I work Thursday nights. So...may fate favor us with another go, in the near future, and on a Friday or Wednesday night? Ummm? How 'bout it, fate?
I am working on it Michelle, I really am. I made a deal with TR that I wouldn't do it on Wednesday nights, since that's when he works, and La Maison du Rob is usually closed for business on Fridays whilst Rob pursues relationships with his many female admirers. I'll keep trying though.
Thanks Fate, we all appreciate all that you do for us. Usually.
But really, Spencer is right. Jam sessions are our friend. So are major sevens, minor sevens, and inversions. And you guys, Spencer rocks on the I-IV-V's, I can tell you.
Remember, as bad as you may think you sound, someone else will always sound much worse. Unless you are that one unlucky person who is the worst in the universe. If that person is reading this, I am sorry. I am sure you're a nice person and have lots of other redeeming skills and qualities, but music just isn't your thing. Maybe try barefoot waterskiing?
